How much does it cost to start a gardening or lawn care business?

Can any small business owners in the gardening/outdoor landscape industry point me in the right direction of how much it's likely to cost to set up a lawn mowing business?

I can’t speak from personal experience on this one, but I’ve done some research and from what I’ve found, below are the average costs to start a lawn care business:

  • Business registration: Up to $700

  • Vehicle and business insurance: $50 to $200 p/month

  • Vehicle and signage: From $10,000 to $50,000+

  • Equipment and tools: From $3,000

  • Utilities and bills: From $100 p/month

You also need to think about marketing, bookkeeping and accounting and whether you’ll need to hire staff as you expand your operations. If you’re buying an existing lawn care/landscaping business with an established client base it could cost you quite a bit more, but you get the benefit of taking on existing clients and generating cashflow straight away. You could also consider buying a franchise.

Hope this helps, but it would be great to hear from people who have started their own landscaping/lawn care business to see whether these costs paint a realistic picture or if there are any other costs missing from the list.
